It’s hard to resist the blub-blub sounds that come from the bubbling coffee in a percolator coffee pot.

The coffee is richer than that prepared in a dripping machine and many models create delicious coffee in a few minutes.

Many coffee drinkers still prefer a freshly brewed cup from a coffee pot as compared to standard drip machines or even the French Press.

Percolators have many uses. They are great for small kitchens with limited counter space, as well as for offices and dormitories that may not have a full kitchen.

When not in use, the coffee maker keeps quickly, so they’re a good option for entertaining, particularly if you’re not a regular coffee drinker. You will also find that they pack well for the trip.

In addition to making a good cup of coffee, percolators have never been so noisy with most coffee machines.

They are very simple in construction, easy to clean and even electric percolators have fewer parts that can break or require maintenance. This increases their longevity and ensures you get your money’s worth.

Although they may seem antiquated, the percolator market remains strong and there are many great models to choose from.

From convenient electric percolators to li-fi hob options, there is a coffee maker for all needs. Hence we’ve created an overview of the best percolator coffee makers for 2021 for you:

Percolator Coffee Maker Buying Guide

What is a Coffee Percolator?

Percolator is nothing but a coffee maker. To be more specific, it is a pot. This pot looks similar to a long teapot.

The word “percolate” means the process of passing steam through the coffee grounds to brew coffee. This brewing method follows the process of continuously cycling boiling water through the grounds until the required coffee strength is reached.

The method of percolation is older than modern brewing methods, like drip-brewing.

While some may think this method is outdated, coffee percolators are ideal for the outdoors as they allow you to brew coffee on an open flame and the pots are quite large, making coffee percolators the machine of choice for adventures.

How To Brew Coffee in a Percolator

Brewing percolator coffee may not seem like a big deal, however, you have to make sure you get the water and heat ratios right. Since you’re brewing over an open flame, it requires a bit of technique to get the process right.

Fortunately, any of the coffee percolators we mentioned above will make the task easy. Let’s have a look at the process:

Step #1: Measure Your Coffee and Water Ratio

The difference between perfectly brewed coffee and bitter tasting coffee all lies in the coffee:water ratios you use.

We use coffee percolators regularly on our camping trips and from our experience a ratio of 17oz of water per 1oz coffee beans will give you the best results.

Step #2: Grind Your Coffee Beans

Use a burr grinder to finely grind your coffee beans of choice. If you don’t have a grinder, make sure the ground coffee you have is fresh.

Step #3: Add Water To The Reservoir

At this stage, it’s time to add the water into the reservoir. Again, we recommend 17 ounces of water per 1oz of coffee beans.

Step #4: Assemble The Coffee Percolator

The assembling of the percolator is pretty simple. But there might be a slight variation depending on the type of percolator you are using.

We suggest checking the instruction manual to make sure the coffee maker is assembled correctly.

Step #5: Add The Coffee Grounds

Now fill the basket with your freshly ground coffee. Don’t overfill the basket as coffee percolators make strong coffee naturally. So, using less coffee will result in a better taste.

Step #6: Get The Heat Going

Now place the percolator on your stovetop. If you own an electric percolator machine, then read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and take action according to that.

For the non-electric percolator users, you need to set the burner at low heat first. Then slowly increase the heat to a medium when it starts to warm up.

Heat the water as slowly as possible. It is the trick to get a perfect brew. Otherwise, you will end with over boiled, burnt, and bitter tasted coffee (yak!).

Step #7: Monitor The Process

You need to check the water frequently. Fortunately, most of the best percolator coffee makers come with a transparent glass knob. It allows you to check the process easily.

If you see any bubbles, that means the water will soon start to steam. So, maintain this temperature level.

For non-electric percolator coffee makers, you need to remove the percolator from the heat and then place it back.

Continue this process until your watercolor turns brown.

Step #8: Remove The Coffee Percolator From The Heat

Once your percolator is brewed enough, remove it from the heat. But, the pot is going to be extremely hot. So, use a cloth to safely remove the pot.

Step #9: Remove The Coffee Grounds

It’s the last phase. When the coffee is brewed properly, remove the used coffee grounds and your coffee is ready!

Wrapping Up

We highly recommend the Farberware Classic Stainless Steel 8-Cup Coffee Percolator for efficiency as a coffee percolator, its professional build, and its ideal size for various activities.

There is nothing more satisfying than brewing your own cup of coffee out in the outdoors. Choosing the right coffee equipment while on your adventures will help you create memories for years to come.
